GoT S02.03 – What is Dead May Never Die

Right so after a hiatus of other shows (namely HIMYM, Revenge, Mentalist, and Scandal), I’ve been forced to try and delve deeper into this show. This fad show. This confusing show. This show where I am still terribly confused about everyone’s motives and why all the good looking men have long hair. This show that everyone is currently watching season 4 of. But I promised new friend TT that I would watch some episodes so we can GOSSIP. So here I go with THOUGHTS and FEELINGS.

– Everyone wears a lot of black on this show.

– Where the bloody hell are the dragons?!

– Where is my love Jon Snow? Does he need caring for with his head wound?

– Renly tut tut. It’s okay that you like boys but don’t force them to be your friend (possibly not okay for a king in this world, but hey, no judgey from this corner). Also your wife Margaery has got to stop showing her assets in public. It’s a tad embarrassing. Also embarrassing in that she wants King Renly to invite her brother in to come get him started. Deary me.

– Sansa (sp?) was weird and moany in this episode. Yes I know she is in a bad way with the whole Joffery debacle. But I mean really.

– Tyrion amuses me. Good times. Pycelle was bad but I never like him or beardy beard anyway so bye bye.

– Also that Tyrion paid the whore twice amused me. I hope she remembers this fondly.

– Theonis just such a weak character. He’ll end up being on the wrong side of teh Stark divide and actually he doesn’t want to side with his family! Starks are more of a family than his own family. Especially when you mix in sexual attraction to sister. Ew.

– Not NEEDLE!! Nooooo.

Arya and Jon are still Miz’s favourite.

Pride and Prejudice – BBC review

Miz has never read, nor watched, any adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. SHOCK. This is much to the horror of every female she knows. Turns out P&P is a favourite of high school friends, university pals, book club girls, and work colleagues. To have not seen the BBC adaptation seems to be close to a social faux pas and at the risk of losing many of her friends, she sat down over two consecutive Sundays (yes of course with bubbles) to watch Mr Darcy and the Bennets. Herewith are Miz’s thoughts.

I get the feeling that the first version of P&P that you watch, you will fall in love with that particular pairing of Darcy and Bennet. That’s why my friends made me watch the 1995 BBC version before any other (and yes I’ll probably watch the Kiera movie but I’ve been warned that I won’t like it, and I would be interested to watch the 1940s version as well). I figure that each female generation will have their own Mr Darcy: Firth is ours and he always will be no matter what role he takes on (by the way, I still think his role in ‘A Single Man’ is one of his most amazing).

What did I think about Darcy? Colin Firth is a dreamboat. Fencing, swimming in the lake, taking a bath. Not going to lie, he’s an excellent choice for Darcy. Dark, brooding, can convey a series of emotions through his eyes and eyebrows. BUT I have to say, I’m not sure whether I liked the Darcy character as much as others do. Yes, the characterisation of him by Firth was excellent, but I did find Darcy to be a bit of a brooder. Yes, I realise that is the reason behind the whole series – so maybe if I re-watched it I would change my mind. Also, he had the best wardrobe out of everyone. AND the sexual tension between him and Lizzie was excellent.

Favourite scene? Lizzy and Catherine de Bourugh in the garden where they are spitting tacks at one another. Closely followed by the dancing scene at the Netherfield Ball – so many skips and hops that one can’t help but be amused.

Who is my favourite character? I have quite a few favourite characters, but I think Mr Bennet is probably my favourite: “Oh, Mr. BENNET!”  He’s bookish as well as sassy, and snaps for him trying to hold his own in his family full of different (and difficult) female personalities. His interactions with his daughters (particularly Lizzy) was enjoyable.

What character would I most like to play? Lydia. She was trouble and I loved every second of her young, scandalous life. She was just so oblivious to all the eye-rolling and wheeling and dealings happening around her. Totes lol! I loved the character of Collins for the same reason – creepy, slick, slimy, and enjoyable hand gestures that I shall be trying to replicate! Also, anyone else think that Collins and Mary should have ended up together?!

What is Jane’s dealio? Us girls had a rather interesting conversation about whether Jane was meant to be simple or just naive, and then related that she wasn’t very pretty in this 1995 version (“homely” more than “beautiful” which is what she is meant to be if you’re being true to the book). I suspect I’ll like the physical nature of Jane in the movie the best.

Special effects: In 1995 the special effects were amazing. Reflections on glass. Good times.

Telephone: I couldn’t help but think if there were such things are telephones, mobiles, emails or txts, then the whole thing wouldn’t have blown up. But then if the whole thing hadn’t blown up, then Darcy wouldn’t have professed his actual love yadda yadda. I would love to see a modern adaptation involving txt messages.

Winking: I generally wished for more winking in this show. Like a come hither wink. I also wanted more pashing. Screw these traditional values.

Pemberly House: Wants it. I didn’t appreciate that Lizzie was so materialistic and I have to banish the thought that she only really fell for Darcy after she saw his house.

(PS Hilarious byte-sized English literature plot summary in video form)

Anyone want to watch the 1940s version with me in a few weekends time?? J

Sherlock – Season 2

Dear lordy this show is captivating. Moriarty is my favourite character ever AND yet I think Sherlock and Watson are also amazing. The cinematography, the setting, the score = all of this is wrapped up in an amazing show which is possibly one of the best things that has been on television in recent years.

This entire series hinged on the idea of fandom (which was appreciated!) and celebrity – Sherlock became a huge celebrity and bad things cascaded from there. The third/finale episode brought the battle between Moriarty and Sherlock to a climax and it was everything I wanted and more! Moriarty basically has set Sherlock up to take the fall as the bad guy and the entire media jumps on board. The only way out is to kill himself which led to the best.moment between Sherlock, Moriarty and Watson. Dear lordy, STILL can’t get over it.

Also: BAD bad Mycroft!

Of course I need to discuss things and feelings now, so SPOILER ALERT:

The twist that Moriarty killed himself was interesting. I hope he isn’t dead – every story needs a super awesome villain. And then if Sherlock was able to fake his death with Molly’s help (though how that happened I will NEVER understand!), then maybe Moriarty isn’t dead either (fake gun shot??). Sherlock killing himself so that Watson, Mrs Hudson and policeman live, was surprisingly touching.

Certainty I feel the most for Watson – he’s so sad and droopy. The phone call/suicide note was super sad and the interaction between these two protagonists was outstanding. Don’t even get me started on the befitting graveyard scene where Watson begged for a miracle. There may have been tears.  I guess Sherlock is holed up with Molly now. Oh la la.

Next… must watch all of season 3… If only there were more hours in the day …

Revenge – S03.13 – Hatred

It’s fair to say that Miz has no idea what just happened in this episode. Were the writers on crack?! So. So. Confused.

They’ve turned Sara into a baddie, Daniel continues to annoy the hell out of anyone with brains, Conrad still is “nice” (kinda) with being in lurrve, Emily’s pain threshold is super high/insane, and yet Vicky’s character turned a corner by confiding in Patrick about the person that raped her. Patrick evil painting slash arson whop whop. However the actor who plays Daniel (Josh Bowman) is super.bad. Not believable AT ALL. His face never changes; he looks the same happy or angry evil.

Sara being shacked up with Daniel was never going to work. Stupid move Daniel and you need to know that you put Sara in a terrible position. And don’t even get Miz started on how terrible Sara is for getting back with the guy who almost killed her in a drunk driving accident. Why on earth did she fall into bed with Daniel again?! AND he’s STILL drinking. Argh, it’s a terrible storyline. And Sara should have run away from the Greyson’s while she had a chance. YOU HAD A CHANCE. I don’t like to say that she got what she deserved, but she certainty didn’t help herself in any way, shape or form.

Sara vs Emily was only going to go the way of Emily.

EWW Jack and Frenchie. So in love that Jack is trying to find a house for both of them to live with Carl. A.K.A. happily ever after. Surely Frenchie should be getting the hell out of the Hamptons which Conrad taking her and her family’s legacy down.

And then of course Aiden was stupid enough to not get rid of the murder weapon (katana). I mean really: He was a trained assassin for crying out loud. Niko obviously found out the weapon so has deduced that Aiden killed her father. Bad news for Aiden but at least that’s some (hopefully excellent) second storyline from Emily vs Daniel’s destruction of each other.

And don’t even get me started on Emily’s blackouts. Convenient? Drugs? Waking up in Conrad’s bed? Oh man, crack-o-licious.

Verdict: Way way too many plot holes for this episode to be viable. Writers were on crack. Pity that they have to stop for the Winter Olympics coverage.

Revenge – S03.12- Endurance

Called Endurance. Miz ENDURED this episode. URGH it’s like it lost everything good about the previous episode/direction. Weak epsidoe but in hindsight I guess it set everything post-shooting-on-the-boat-and-framing-victoria up.

  • Nolan wears a striped jacket – that’s literally the main thing I took away from this episode AND it was in the opening shots!! Candy striper yahoo.
  • Daniel is still a drip. Kill him off already.
  • Emily regained her memories (boo-urns).
  • Emily’s hair has been browned (is that even a word?). Basically more belivable character-wise or something. And this means that she has hung up her revenegey hat. Or something. PLOT TWIST!
  • Emily can’t have babies. That’s sad face. Stupid Daniel shooting her uterus. Maybe that’s what Baby Carl is for.
  • Urgh Sara. GO AWAY.
  • Ugh Aiden. DO AWAY. Or be killed by Niko due to Takeda’s death. Ozzies are hard beasts – don’t cross them. Whoops, too late.
  • Patrick. I was rooting for you and Nolan. I really really really want more Nolan sexytime / true love. you ruined it. But I am fully in CAMP NOLAN. GO AWAY NO ONE LIKES YOU.
  • What happened to Charlotte?
  • YES JACK! Punch Daniel. You GO GUY.
