The purpose of this episode was to go back in time and see who super awesome Olivia could ever have an affair with Pres Scumbag. Turns out Miz felt almost sympathetic to President – what is this world coming to?! We also found out that the big bad wolf was the Vice President’s Chief of Staff, Billy Chambers. Ooo guessed it! He had creepy hair. The blackmail tape? Yip, that was him. More interestingly it was a recording of Olivia and Pres in their first tryst together, which Billy had been sitting on for two years to find the right patsy to bring down Fitz. Amanda was his patsy; She was also his girlfriend and carried his baby.
Two years ago Olivia was bought into Fitz’s campaign as a governor to help him and his wife seem more personable. And she dominated. You go girl! Unfortunately she dominated and challenged so so much that Fitz and her had sparks flying all over the show. It was clear to everyone that his marriage was dead as a dead thing: He asks Olivia: What kind of a coward was I to marry her and not wait for you to show up?”. He realised that his wife was also using him to become First Lady (she made up a fake miscarriage to get the support of the public) and he simply fell in love with Olivia. It was a bit sad really – silly politics game.
Other things were revealed tonight away from this main storyline: Abby looks amazing with curly hair and loves to bake cupcakes, which made my heart warm. Huck used to be super hairy and lived on the streets. Oh yeah and poor Gideon had scissors shoved in his neck by Scumbag Billy and will probably bleed to death. Sad face.
Bring on the season finale!
Plane crashes aren’t at all exciting. The investigations and resulting public relations are interesting because of all the mud slinging that occurs in public, and even more that must happen behind closed doors. And this was interesting. But really this plot point just gave Olivia’s B Team something to focus on while Olivia mooned over Pres Scumbag and Huck tortured someone.
The MOST interesting person this episode was Huck. Man, he’s nasty. But a reformed piece of nasty. So Miz still likes him. telling the team how he would stake out the apartment in order to keep tabs on Olivia, and kidnap Amanda, was most excellent. Then turns out he knows the person paid to abduct Amanda and learns that Amanda is dead.
Huck had a breakdown after working for Black Ops for CIA and his history was erased, no family or friends contactable, and Olivia picked him up and made him part of her family. And it is apparently that he loved the thrill of torturing and capturing people, so that Olivia straightened him out. So when Olivia asks him to find Amanda’s body, you knew it was an awful awful thing to ask…
Now I never warmed to Amanda Paris but still, she didn’t deserve to die in a political game to keep her silent of her baby or deal she made with another person. Pres Scumbag at least looked upset, whereas Cyrus looked like an ass and couldn’t give a toss. Olivia told Pres where her body was located (thanks to Huck’s efforts). Then we found out (via Stephen who used his “wits”) that Amanda’s baby wasn’t the Presidents. oh la la.
Lady Vice Pres seems like a doosh. I suspect she was written that way so we think she masterminded the whole Pres-Amanda blackmail tape. But then Pres Scum forced her to vote in a way she didn’t want to (I was wondering whether there was any form of cabinet solidarity for non-conscious votes. Silly American politics.).
Pres Scumbag did have one of the best scenes this week though where he tried to be spontaneous and leave the White House. Sure, he went straight to Olivia’s. Well of course he did. He lusts/loves her.
Til next week…
This episode involved a background case in Spanish which Miz tuned in and out of. There was a wife that was supposedly abducted, but really she wanted to leave her awful dictator husband because she didn’t love him; something something political asylum. Sorry writers, didn’t buy it. BUT the other Pres Scumbag story blew up and rapidly is becoming the most excellent drawcard (aka everything that he touches disappears/goes boom/goes bad)
BUT – Best quote and soliloquy that Miz has heard on tv in a very long time happened care of Cyrus. It’s way way too long to transcribe in its entirety. But it was gold. Also, Cyrus is gay. Excellent.

This episode was also excellent for providing some background on the characters by way of Cyrus/Pres Scumbag doing background checks on the members of Olivia’s team.
- Huck (Miz’s fav) is a mystery but he did work for the CIA, is a hacker, and has a bunch of redacted blacked out reports on his file. He’s also huge, though he supports Olivia in a lot of ways which is cute.
- Harrison had some legal troubles and Olivia defended him pro bono. But he’s super rich.
- Stephen was a big-wig on the up and up then suffered a major mental breakdown. Now he’s engaged yet turns up to Olivia’s house with red wine in the middle of the night when Olivia is in a state. Nice guy or just knows too much about what’s going on with Olivia to turn away?
- Abby (who has gorgeous hair) was domestically abused by her husband and Olivia saved her.
- Quinn is the most interesting though. She didn’t exist until a couple of years ago. Ooo, way to capture my attention writers!
Then in the closing few minutes, Amanda Paris was abducted – ooooooo. Even spookier was the Pres Scumbag doign a news conference on the tv that was left playing after the abduction. But by whom? Either Pres Scumbag (Miz doubts it), First Lady (possibility), or some third party (greater possibility) that she made the phone call to and declared she was “out”.
Wants to go home and watch the next three episodes. Right. Now.
Miz (and TechSupport slyly looking from the corner of the room) did a double-header of this season last night. It’s. Just. So. Addictive.
This episode will be known for the big reveal at the end of the episode where the First Lady KNEW about Olivia and Pres Scum’s affair and indeed actually encourages him to “get some” so he can “sleep”. Though I don’t think these types of “arrangements” revolving around “sleeping”, but Miz has known to be wrong before (not on very many occasions ha!). Miz did enjoy knowing that boys are silly and the First Lady has her own agenda.
Talking about boys being silly: Turns out Amanda (aka Paris) is pregnant. Uh oh. Bad Pres Scumbag – doesn’t he know no hubba hubba if you ain’t got a rubber? Some people are just stoopid. Also someone has delivered a recording of the sexytime between Pres and Amanda to Cyrus (see below) and they think it’s Olivia. Even though it isn’t. It’s also not Lie To Me journalist guy. So who is it? Dum dum dum.
Meanwhile Meredith Grey’s dropkick father has morphed into the President’s second in command. No, not the Vice Pres (he’s off being important off-screen); Chief of Staff known as Cyrus Beene. Him and Olivia used to be “tight” but now he is throwing his toys because he didn’t know that Olivia and Pres where having sexytime. Though I suspect he’s actually angry because he should have known, but somehow he didn’t.
Huck is excellent.
The case here was quite interesting actually: millionaire lady’s brat of a son, accused of rape, which he didn’t do, mother wants him off and enlists the help of Olivia. Though he didn’t turn up for court (ROOKIE move) and Olivia had to find him and bring him in. Turns out he raped this “victim’s” best friend, paid her off, and then she committed suicide. Olivia talked mother into giving up her son on rape charges. it was an excellent moral victory.
All around, good episode Scandal. So then, straight onto the next one…
(It’s the new Lie To Me!!! It even has the same people. You go Quinn and tell handsome boy from lie to me where to shove his news outlet hounding).
So, a judge nominee is discovered to have alliances with the finest Madam in Washington. It becomes all politicky (more so than it is generally in the US) as it is the new President’s first Supreme Court nominee. Was he a client, or wasn’t he? (Also the newly engaged Stephen was a past client, oh la la). Protecting the client list is a difficult business. Oh yea, he was a client but he married “Stacey” the first girl in the Madam list. Oh la la. Sex and scandal.
And then, Amanda (the one who had the sweet baby affair with Pres Dooshbag) (ALSO IT IS PARIS FROM GIRLMORE GIRLS!!!), anyway Amanda disappears from hospital after the suicide watchy thingy. Eventually Olivia manages to woo Amanda into coming under her protection. Unfortunately the help is a double-edged sword represents itself as then the reporter turns up and he know, oh yet he knows, that he’s onto something.
I liked it. Now, sleep. Good thing there is only 7 episodes in this season!! WHOP WHOP
TechSupport is doing geeky guy building stuff outside so Miz decides it’s time for a new tv show. SCANDAL IT IS. It’s like an intelligent person’s version of Revenge (and yes I watch Revenge too, so it’s like the pot calling the kettle black :P). It’s like a crisis management legal community.
So, Miz has dipped into the world that is Olivia Pope and Associates. And boy, does everyone in this world dress well!!
This episode is about a military man who has gay trysts even though he is a right wing anti-gay republican. Shakes head – he would rather be framed for murder, than admit he is gay. Literally everyone else in this show (and in my lounge room) are shaking their heads.
Parallel storyline is that Olivia is best mates with the President and also the previous Comms Director for the White House (under the former President) and he asks her to sort a situation with a staff member, Amanda. She finds out that the President lied to her about his “intentions” (by calling Amanda “sweet baby” nontheless) and then there was a bit of a hot scene where he tried to make out with Olivia. Bad news Mr President. Bad news.
Other characters: Was the new girl called Quinn? She was very proper but lovely. And then there was Stephen, who was going to (slash does) propose. And Olivia sorts out the ring. It was super sweet and the ring choices were to die. for. Abby is my favourite as she is swarmy and sassy, likes it! Was Huck the one who dresses in the three-quarter tops and silently broods from the corner (unless there is a girl crying in the toilets)? IT nerb and hacker I think.
So what genre is this tv show? Girly? Procedural? The Sex And the City crowd? Boston Legal? Unsure. However I do know that TechSupport got a little bit into the show halfway through too, and Miz really really liked the outfits. And the crisis management aspect of this show is fascinating and enjoyable.
This was one of our favourite episode in the Miz and TechSupport household. Why? Because showed the prowess of the BAU team’s interview techniques. This wasn’t one where they had to figure out the unsub: they had a pool of three suspects, and then it was about probing and using non-verbal clues to help determine who was lying or telling the truth.
The backbone of this case hinged on the tragedy of race relations in the 1960 and how some rebel white clan members attacked and castrated a black man who was falsely accused of rape. This backbone led Rossi to interview the dad of the family and to help along the interview and confession, Rossi confessed that he used to be bullied, and in turn his bullies made him bully a young black kid. This was incredibly sad and you could see the physical pain on Rossi’s face. Who knows the damage this will do to his and Morgan’s relationship.
The other thing that baffled me is why there were no records of why the dad was taking the testosterone – the answer was because he was castrated but this wasn’t revealed until the end of the show. If Garcia can hack into sealed criminal records, then why isn’t there records of this?
Obviously his resolution also meant that the son wasn’t his biological son. Though this was the least of the son’s issues:
Charles: You think slaves had prozac? No, they got out there, they worked.
Rossi: So if your son has mental issues, you think he should just push through them.
Charles: You’re damned right.
Finally, the haunting music at the end of the episode was an excellent touch. I think it was Strange Fruit by whom I presume was Billie Holiday which gives rise to the name of this episode.
